Tony Alleyne, the man who turned his apartment into the Star Trek Starship Voyager has gone bankrupt. He started transforming his apartment after his wife left him when he replaced the refrigerator with a ‘warp coil’. The apartment is located in Hinckley, Leics, has moulded walls, touch-panel blue lighting, and a command console. He even built a life-size model of the show’s transporter room with reshaped windows to look like portholes and set up vertical lights to give the illusion of being beamed up. Tony at one time had the apartment for auction on eBay for $2 million but had no luck in selling. Tony maxed out 14 credit cards accumulating £100,000 in debt. His goal was to lure other Trekkies to pay him to convert their humble abodes.
Here’s what Tony has to say on his grand plan:
But I was wrong and just overstretched. Building it in my apartment was the enjoyable and easy bit. But then I got hooked up with marketing and merchandise people here and in America and it all got out of hand.
I’m still proud of what I created but it’s been a financial disaster.
At least with all that credit card use, he probably earned a trip to space with all the accumulated airmiles.

Jason: You’ve really missed the boat. There’s nothing about evil capitalism here to blame - actually, some of the respect I have for this guy’s plan was the desire to make it enjoyable for others rather than keep it to his self. That’s the mark of a true capitalist - making something that others value.
The problem is that in any system - statistical, scientific, academic, athletic, financial - we have to have a way to convert qualitative, fuzzy feelings into measurable quantitative data. A basic economics course would explain one of the motivations for this is pursuing efficiency in what we do, as well as allocating scare resources. For instance, why can’t we all have a $100 million Voyager replica in our own 100,000 sq. feet warehouses?
Something’s got to decide, and it’ll either be the economic rules of a relatively free market, or an authoritarian leader. There are no other viable alternatives.
So think it over. If you like this guy’s work, let him know. If enough people were active in supporting it with their own money, his dream would get somewhere. Otherwise you’re helping him fail.

Personally I pitty the guy. I’m a trek fan myself but far from being a “trekkie” and i feel sorry for people who have to use anything, whether it be star trek or anything else to seemingly escape from life so dramatically.
That said, turning your house into a star trek paradise is one thing… turning your house into a star trek paradise and maxing out 14 credit cards in the process…. is just too much.

This is probably one of the coolest things i’ve seen. The guy deserves credit for his masterpiece, but blowing 100,000 on it was just a little obsessive.

And capitalsm is not about not being nice either. If a capitalist is exploiting others for personal gain than it’s the market rules that needs changing. Every company needs to maximize it’s return of investment to ensure survival of the business. And survival of the business means people still have a work to go to. In doing so the capitalist utilies the rules or laws of the market, since all forces of the market has to. This means that if the laws are flawed, we get what seems to be “evil” capitalism.

That’s a great apartment, and I commend his effort. Guy made a bit of a mistake financially, but- that’s what happens sometimes.
This isn’t “typical capitalist values” keeping a guy down- the resources that went into his apartment came from somewhere. Artistic expression is all fine and good, but no matter what your values are, at some point, somebody’s gonna have to pay the piper.
It’d probably kill him after all this, but if he started selling fixtures from the place, I’d buy some of them.

Very good idea, very good execution of the product but bad planning on marketing it.
If only he had a sensible businessman trekkie with him…
I suppose just renting it out for parties could over a period of time recover the cost.
Or perhaps remove everything, take everything to a new party place or where trekkies congregate, and advertise there.
There is something in this, and I am talking from my experience in running my own business succesfully and also in advertising and marketing. There is definitely a way to sell this and make a nice profit too. But I am nowhere near where he is..

You gotta love all the “better things to do with your time/money” comments, since all that is a matter of preference, personally I think he did an excellent job, hell I’d bet dime to dollar he accomplished more with less money than the original set designers did. He should be getting hired to do this for hollywood!
I hope i win the lottery soon, I would love to have a bombshelter/office/bunker voyager style built under my home!
My other question I would have for him, he should’ve considered renting it out, I know more than a few people who would pay for the privelidge, hell look at the las vegas hilton and the way they have star trek themed in their casino, there is definately money to be made off of trekkies
As for those who say he was ridiculous for maxing out his credit cards, is it any less or more ridiculous than say a restaranteur who mortgages his home and maxes out a dozen credit cards trying to open and maintain his restaurant? From the article it sounds like this is basically a failed business venture, not sure how taxes work in his country, but in the u.s. he could probably ride off alot of that debt as a loss.

Adding insult to his injury, the credit card companies will revoke frequent miles or “rewards points” if he’s late on just one payment or slides into default.
The puzzling part, if I understand correctly, is he renovated an APARTMENT not an owned CONDO (or he could have bought a house). At least he could have put it on the market and bailed out. Why would anyone “buy” an apartment on EBAY if the landlord can evict the tenant? Did I misunderstand his ownership position in the apartment?
Finally the sad part is that he didn’t buy a house and load it with high-end collectibles that he could have sold years from now. (The house would have been a good long-term investment in case his Star Trek memorabilia didn’t produce the desired return on investment.)
I say this man needs to take courses in basic finance 101.

Most people live in apartments in other countries. Homes are too costly. 2 or 3 people working full time could afford a 2-bedroom home mortgage.
Guess what in the end its only money. Can’t take the shit with ya when you die. Only 1 in a million people have the nerve to take a money risk.(Not an actual statistic.) The rest of us just go to work and spend money on everyday crap. So congratulations. You took a chance with your money.

I think there is a lot behind his brief reference to marketing people. If you look at his website, it’s fairly polished — at least, not amateurish.
I think the biggest mistake this guy made was taking advice from people who probably just wanted to milk as much cash from them as they could.
It’s a shame he did not find someone who could give him some solid business advice. For instance, what if he had launched a range of low-end products. Star Trek style iPod or computer case-mods.
There’s a tonne of things he could have done to capitalise on his design skill — unfortunately he set his target audience at millionnaire trekkies — which i’d imagine is a fairly small market.

Under the new US bankruptcy laws, all he would be required to do is take a means test which would determine how much of that debt he would have to repay over a period of 5 years. For example, if his annual income is 30k, he would probably have to repay somewhere between 10-15,000 of what he owes. That is reasonable based on what he can actually repay. The only negative impact would be that his credit is tarnished for the next 7-10 years and he has to take two 2-hour credit counseling courses before and after the bankruptcy hearing. So the guy could keep his Trek flat and continue to live in his established nirvanna. It’s not like he needs to spend anymore after building his dream house anyway. He just has to live in it and watch his Star Trek DVDs for the next 10 years so he’s set.

The real evil is that lenders continue to offer credit to those that they know are in over their heads in credit card debt. I am amazed he could continue to make minimum payments on all of those cards while continuing to accrue that much debt. The evil is lenders who allow debtors to dig their own graves with no hope of ever digging their way out of debt. It is a downward spiral that they know will inevitably lead to bankruptcy yet they simply assist them in the process of doing so.
This guy was just living a dream. He was living his life. You only live once unless you’re James Bond. If we all cannot afford to live our lives and enjoy it because we are all impoverished and working class drones then we all might as well lock ourselves in our homes, go to work and remain impoverished slaves to the infernal system that has been imposed upon us.

Wow! If nothing else, he has inspired a whole lot of people to think, and discuss various political topics worth knowing about.
Perhaps the gentleman was a little short-sighted in planning to pay back the loans, but I’ve seen worse done by “regular” people. they just don’t get the coverage this guy did because they squander it all in mundane ways.
As far as what I think he should do with it, I think it would make a wonderful bed and breakfast trekkie style.

It’s awsome what he did with his place. Exactly Franky, That’s why Anon users leave negative feedback because they don’t have the balls to leave their actual names. Plus the dumbass probably didn’t even read the entire article, before posting. If he did he would know what we all know. That this guy lives in the U.K. Anon user, whoever you are, I hope you look back in this thread and see what an utter idiot you are and by making fun of people and leaving negative feedback you basically have just shown what a dumbass you are. 1. about the microwave. i saw this home on HGTV and he has a cover over it…so it disappears!
2. i Love the concept! very creative. lacking the products from the “real” voyager (if it were really out there in space), i think he used chrome piping, lighting etc, in great, innovative ways.
3. storage is cool! some of the storage bins are already used in offices…why not in the home.
4. lighting….a bit too “dark” for my old eyes! but still way cool!
i’m sorry he went bankrupt…but many folk do it every day and have nothing to show for all the money they spent.
i’d love to have part of my house done like this…specifically my bathroom.
…and before some say i’m being an “anony” , this Is my real name…long story…not all folk have “normal” lives…why not live out the fantasy!

He stood by ever so strongly for something he believed in with his whole heart.
You have to admire this man, no matter what. Who can turn around and equally say they have the courage to do what he did? he truly made a dream come true. If i were him id be charging for admission to his house. Even if its $50 for a visit. Id pay just to walk in and marvel at the sheer beauty of the place. Maybe they should even do some movie scenes or something, get paramount to shoot a few clips in there. See how it all goes.

I think what he has done is commendable. Following his passion and recreating his environment to suit HIS tastes. Perhaps he could have used slightly better financial judgement (a pitfall of ANY renovation) however, I think his real mistake was not using better judgement on how to market his newfound passion. Instead of trying to charge top dollar to convert other peoples homes (a limited market) he should have tried to market a DVD “do it yourself” video at a much more accessable price point and done a volume business more affordable to any of the masses who might have been interested. He seemed to feel (and I have read his quotes elsewhere on this) that people should pay him top dollar for his expertise. This in my experience has never been a good approach to marketing a business no matter WHAT the business is, however in a market where somewhat altruistic fandom is the norm, that attitude can be perceived as more than slightly unpalatable. Given the prices he was looking to charge, I can’t see how he could have succeeded. Perhaps he can still change his marketing strategy and dig himself out of his predicament, but if I were his business/financial advisor, I would advise him to get himself a savvy business partner. Like the saying goes, “half of something is always better than all of nothing”. Good luck to you Tony Alleyne! I truly hope things work out for you.

Well it’s pretty amazing, He probliy could of done it better if he had waited and did it piece by piece, he probably could have done it cheaper if he tried, He should have done it in a condo not an apartment. I really love it though, don’t make fun of him, I’m planning on make a Metroid room
