While WineZap has been around for a while, I hadn’t heard of it until today. At first glance, it seems like an idea that’s been done before: a site that keeps track of wine ratings and average prices and lets you search and place orders. Ho-hum. But the neat part is how they let you access it. Say you’re at a wine store and you find a wine that sounds appealing, but you don’t really know if the price is any good. Simply SMS the name and vintage to WineZap, and they’ll send you back the low, high, and average price for that wine. Include your zip code in the request, and they’ll send you a list of local retailers selling that particular bottle and their prices.
As of today, they’ve introduced a simplified, low-bandwidth mobile version of their site for users with mobile internet devices like the Palm Treo, RIM Blackberry, or soon, the Apple iPhone. Yet another way to make sure you’re getting a good value before you open your wallet!
