What if…
You want to search for a person’s face on the world wide web? The best option is probably to use Google Image Search and check all the images, but the only bad part is that you will get a full picture instead of the face only. That is when the Google Portrait joins the party and detects face images using the Google Image + IDIAP + Torchvision.
After performing a search the results got 5 details:
- the face
- confidence
- size
- original image URL
- site
In case you didn’t understand how it works yet, here is a simple example…
When searching for Angelina Jolie you get the face image:

Instead of the full image:

Pretty cool, huh? I mean the application, not the image ;p

Thanks for your positive comments on Google Portrait.
Recently, on Feb 21-22 Google Portrait received a lot of queries. This causes several troubles and we had to restrict the use of Google Portrait during 3 days using a password. Today, Feb 26 Google Portrait is back to normal WITHOUT password but with a restriction on the number of queries. As a consequence, Google Portrait can be temporary not accessible depending on the load.
See http://www.idiap.ch/googleportrait/changelog.html for more information about these troubles.
