The Collective Type Project

What would it look like if 255 people wrote the same letter in the same place?

The collective Type Project can be inserted in the same category as SwarmSketch – it is all about the collective aspect and people participating in the project.

With that being said, the objective of Collective Type is to build up a font made of different drawings that visitors create.

The font will consist of the usual 90 numbers and letters of the Roman alphabet, this detail excludes the special characters that some languages (Portuguese for example) use like “ç” and “~”.

Each character is made of 225 different drawings produced by the visitors, this means that after all those drawings the final aspect of a letter/number is achieved. Right now all the letters and numbers are completed (total of 20,749 drawings) and you can either check the whole gallery or a specific letter. For instance, here are the 225 drawings that make up the letter B:

At this time there are only a couple of items left in order to create the font, you can participate by drawing one of the punctuation characters still available like the following ones – # % = ^.

And for a more technical explanation of how the project works you got the following description:

When you add a letter to the collection, it is averaged with everything else in the collection. The end result is an image that is dark where letters intersect, and light where they don’t.

The Collective Type Project was made by Jeff Weir.

PS – One of the interesting features of this project is to Write In Collective.
