In a seedy shop in the wrong part of town, I happened upon an unusual discovery, Pirates of the Caribbean electronic products. There was a Pirates of the Caribbean TV/DVD combo and a Pirates of the Caribbean DVD player. They were made by a company that I had not come across before, Runa. I felt that this must be some sort of unlicensed import, not so. Such things would not be out of place in that particular shop. I soon discovered that I was mistaken and that the apparently poor quality electronics were indeed licensed by Disney.
Of the TV/DVD Combo, Disney says:
Our 20” TV features digital tuner (ATSC), 181 channel memory, closed captioning, V-chip, on-screen display and 120-minute sleep timer. The DVD player supports CDR, CDRW, DVD+/RW playback, Picture CD. Features Dolby Digital, on-screen display, and default parental control. Also includes full-function remote control, headphone jack, A/V input jack on side and rear.
The DVD player specifications as listed on the Disney shopping site:
Supports CD, CDR and CDRW playback, plus supports picture CD, DVD+R, DVD+RW. Features TV Guardian (requires subscription), Dolby digital (AC3) audio output, NTSC, 2-channel stereo output, 10-Bit video D/A converter, NTSC video output, on-screen display user set up menu, Parental controls, Chapter/Time search, audio language selection, subtitle selection, multi-angle; zoom, full-function remote control, coaxial digital audio output, YUV or Progressive scan output selectable, S-Video output, composite video output, 2-channel audio output, AC input 120V.
Verdict:
These products looked of questionable quality, but they would appear to be good for the kiddies. They are highly affordable and look quite fun. The prices are comparable with a number of low-end solutions, but they are less versatile. There is no DivX support and they do not play PAL.
Price for the Pirates of the Caribbean DVD Player: $69.95
Price for the Pirates of the Caribbean 20” Combo TV/DVD Player: $199.00

Hey, why are you calling Wal-Mart seedy?

As I am based in Japan, there is no Wal-Mart, and trust me, the place that I was in was seedy. The kind of store where they just throw in everything in one big room. French maid costumes next to kids toys. All kinds of interesting gadgets that are not for general consumption.
Disney electronics might be everywhere in the states, but where I am, you cannot find it anywhere. You learn something new (or old) everyday.

Count yourself lucky. Every major children’s movie character from the past 5 years get splashed on children’s products in America. Why Spider-Man is placed on 2- and 3-year-old toddler toys is beyond me. It scares me what babes are exposed to these days.
