Want to cook the perfect hard-boiled egg? Give the Foolproof Egg Timer a try. After all, the word “foolproof” is right in the title, and you’ve gotta love that kind of confidence.
Using the timer is simple - just throw it in with your eggs and keep an eye on the color. As the eggs cook, the timer gets darker in the middle. As this darker region expands it will come in contact with one of three lines ( hard, medium, or soft ) that correspond with your tastes. The sensor even accounts for the number of eggs, the amount of water, and the altitude the eggs are being cooked at. In other words, as long as you are paying attention, you really can’t screw this up.

I bought one of these. It didn’t work. Simple as that. I normally cook my eggs from the boiling point for 3 minutes with perfect results each time. I dropped this unit in from cold water, watched and waited for it to change colours and ended up pulling the eggs out when they were terribly hard cooked without the “timer” changing colour at all. A dismal failure. It cost me $9.00 for the timer and the loss of 8 eggs to overcooking.
