San Francisco is home to some of the world’s most popular Internet sites. You may or may not have noticed that there was some major disruption to the Internet in the last few hours. Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s underground power system malfunctioned due to a power surge created by a smaller blackout. From the Reuters report, it is understood that some sort of chain reaction occurred as circuit breakers failed to engage.
The power cut affected a few sites that were hosted at a 227,000 square foot data center owned by 365 Main, including Craigslist, Technorati, Netflix, Typepad and Gamespot were knocked offline as much of the city blacked out. It took about five hours after the power came back on for Craigslist to be restored. Â
