Trojan.NewMediaCodec is a new virus using old tricks to get onto your computer. Infected attachments and scam sites are the source of infection. People who download videos from websites that are not secure are most at risk.

Trojan.NewMediaCodec is a program that typically purports to be a needed upgrade to Windows Media Player in order to view adult oriented videos on certain websites. However, Trojan.NewMediaCodec actually downloads and installs additional malware on the user’s machine.
Generally, this Trojan is downloaded and installed by running a malicious email attachment, but it may be lurking on various sites on the Internet, much as much spyware has in the past. Once NewMediaCodec is on your PC, it is a significant risk. It is a downloader, so it could infect your computer with further malware. As with any Trojan, you should change all of your important passwords if you have been infected. Exercise extreme caution, with any downloads or suspicious email attachments and scan your system often.
