The gaming keyboard is a tough market. Razer and Logitech provide some very high quality options, but there is another contender. The Steelkeys 6G is a keyboard that can certainly compete. While the features of the 6G are by no means unique, Steel Keys have managed to pull together all of the aspects of a great gaming keyboard, without any gimmicks. Yeah, the 6G has been around for a while, but it has achieved none of the hype of the other gimmicky gaming boards.
The Steelkeys 6G is heavy duty in every sense of the word. It is built to withstand some rough play and it is heavier than a standard keyboard. The extra weight gives it stability. You do not need your keyboard sliding around when you are in the zone. It can decipher multiple, simultaneous keystrokes. This is thanks to an onboard chip that handles the processing of your keystrokes. While typing with the 6G, I was extremely impressed at the feel. It seemed a little more responsive. The keys had slightly more resistance than most keyboards, without seeming stiff. It felt, for lack of a better word, refined.
I compared the Steelkeys 6G to both the Razer Tarantula and the Logitech G15 and have to say that the 6G impressed me the most. I preferred the slightly springier feel and the solid look of the 6G to either model. I type very quickly and do not really have a need for programmable keys, nor do I really feel the need for an LCD screen. When I type, I tend to hammer the keys quite hard. Cheap keyboards have a relatively short lifespan at my heavy hands. If you tend to pound your keyboard, hit a lot of keys at once or in very rapid succession, if you want a standard set of keys without LCD screens, hotkeys or backlighting, the 6G is a great model. What did not grab me about the 6G was the price. It is rather expensive considering the extra features of its comparably priced competitors. If it were about $20 cheaper then it would be a great keyboard at a great price. Still, with 18K connections behind each key, steel bar reinforcing and a complete set of alternative color replacement keys, it is not bad value.
