Grain Surfboards use a combination of Northern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar to produce their unique and attractive wooden surfboards. While it is hardly likely that the pros will be giving up the ‘glass for wood, it is interesting to see some eco-conscious surfboard makers starting to attract attention.
According to Grain:
You”ll discover that wooden surfboards ride with more energy and carry more momentum down the wave. And while they may seem slightly heavier on land, in water, they feel much lighter due to the inherent buoyancy of wood.
The boards are heavier than standard surfboards, but they pack some extra buoyancy. Extra buoyancy can be great for fun-sized days, but when it gets big, I can imagine that it would make it harder to get out. I would be interested to see some pictures of them being used on some bigger stuff and to see how wood stacks up against bamboo as a board making material. All in all, very cool stuff and some great looking boards. Prices vary but are between the $1500 and $2000 mark for most models. Build your own kits start at around $500.

Hey, thanks for the note on Grain. They’ve begun glassing boards with bamboo cloth and are testing a bio-resin as well. Should be able to avoid toxic, harmful pollutants completely! Making progress and having fun with it.
