Dr John Papandriopoulos is my personal hero right now. He has filed patent applications in the United States and Australia for a new type of technology that will deliver speeds of up to 250 mbps over good old copper lines. This is great news for countries where fiber-optic rollout is prohibitively expensive; countries like Australia, which have always been behind when it comes to Internet speed.

Dr Papandriopoulos’ technology works by removing telephone interference that slows down broadband connections. By eliminating the interference, it is possible to boost the speed. What is even more interesting about the technology is that it is software based. It would simply require installation in telephone exchanges and into existing modems. While half of Australia’s broadband looks to have been solved, the other half, ridiculous bandwidth costs, remains unchanged.
