Microsoft Throws a Bone with IE7

Internet Explorer 7 Logo in Chalk

Internet Explorer 7 has been met with a somewhat tepid response from Internet users around the world.  Part of that reason could be the fact that people are not overly enthused at the thought of installing Windows Genuine Advantage on their systems.  Another factor could be that Firefox is a much more versatile platform for surfing.  Whatever the reasons, Redmond has decided to remove the validation requirement for IE7.  They also gave it a few tweaks to make it a little bit more user friendly.

This writer thinks that it is a case of too little too late.  Instead of hounding Windows users into installing WGA, which some might consider malware, they would have done better to have made IE7 freely available from the very beginning.  Their strongest competitors do not require any sort of validation process.  Removing the validation requirement probably won’t win over very many from the Firefox crowd, what it might do is bring in a few IE6 users that were scared off by the prospect of validation.  It is a nice thing that Microsoft has done, but one has to wonder if it will make much of a difference.
