Nvidia has done something that is both startling and really cool at the same time. They have released a new middleweight graphics card. The 8800 GT sports 512MB of RAM, which places it in fourth place behind the 8800 Ultra, GTX and GTS models. It seems to be taking aim at AMD’s 2900 XT card, performance is on par with the 2900 XT and for most gaming applications, superior. The best news for new PC buyers or people that are upgrading is that it is significantly cheaper than the AMD alternative.
With the 8800 GT, users will be able to get a very capable graphics card for a reasonable price. Now average computer users will be able to afford a DX10 capable card. It could be just the thing for the next generation of first person shooters. It is sufficient for playing Crysis at some very respectable settings and it should have a bit of life as games become more demanding. This is certainly bad news for AMD who have been fighting it out on two fronts. They now seem to have lost the battle for middle ground for now. This could mean a pricing war is about to start up.
The 8800 GT looks to be priced around the $260 mark (a little over $100 cheaper than the 2900XT).

O cmon what a waste of a review lets pump Nvidias sales up for 2 weeks so when ATi bring out the hd3800 people can look back at history and say Nvidia was just to strong. How about if they bought out a midrange card 12 months ago that would have been much better. Dont ramp something up that in 2 weeks will be obsolete.

We will see when the hd3800 hits, won’t we. For now the 8800 GT looks good, though I am a GTX man myself.
