Build Your Own Island from Plastic Bottles, The Ultimate DIY ProjectStumble This

Spiral Island

What on this planet can be more incredibly awesome than building your own floating island.  Seriously, this idea has so much potential it is not funny.  You could go hog wild with one of these things, providing you have the budget, the patience and live somewhere that it won’t get sunk like Spiral Island did.

Spiral Island was the brainchild of Rishi Sowa, who built his first artificial island in 1998.  Plastic bottles were netted together to support a structure of bamboo and plywood.  It was originally 66 by 54 feet but it grew and grew until it was supporting a two story house.  Mangrove trees were grown on it to provide shade and privacy, it had a solar oven for cooking and could be steered and moved about by a motorized system.  250,000 plastic bottles were used in its construction.  Unfortunately it was wiped out in 2005 by Hurricane Emily.

Now Rishi is getting started again with a new island.  He has a steady supply of plastic bottles and will be provided with plants from local nurseries.  Let’s hope that Spiral Island Mk II is even more fabulous than the first one and does not share the same miserable fate.
