Matra MS, a company that most people have not heard of, were previously involved in automobile production. They managed to win an F1 title back in 1969 and a Le Mans 24 hour race using their very own V12. Given their racing accomplishments, it might seem more than a little surprising that they are preparing to enter the electric vehicle market. It all has to do with a little electric bike called the MS1, a “Human Electric Hybrid Motorcycle” to be precise. The MS1 won’t be taking out Le Mans any time soon, it is limited to 28 MPH when running in electric mode. The range is 62 miles, and there are pedals in case you want to get some exercise or if you run out of power.
Pedaling the MS1 would require a bit of effort. It weighs in at 40 kg, which is nothing for a motorcycle, but a lot for a bicycle. I’ve got to say, this does look like an interesting way to commute. I spend thirty minutes driving to and from work every day, the distance is approximately ten kilometers. I would hazard a guess that I could take my commute time down to about twenty minutes with something like this. A built in LED light will keep you visible at night and disc brakes will have you stopping quickly. Plug your battery in at work and you will be paying nothing for your commute.
The catch, the price at $4,951 (but it is a lot cheaper than a car and looks to be of high quality.
