One of the ways that I like to unwind after a hard day at the grindstone is with a short Call of Duty 4 session each day. I try to limit my time, but spend a few hours at war on Sunday. In the few weeks I have owned the game, I managed to work my way up to within 300 experience points of Brigadier General. Not bad for about twenty-five hours of play. Then the inexplicable happened, my profile vanished. All of the challenges, experience, rank, gone like they had never existed. It was like someone had flipped a reset switch on my game.
I’ve scoured the boards and found little more than rumors. Asking people in game produced predictably mature responses, which I shall not repeat lest I offend those with more delicate sensibilities than my own. There were a couple of people that new someone that lost their COD4 profile, well I am telling you this phenomenon is real and it sucks. I don’t know what caused it, I didn’t have a backup and I have to say, I feel much more inclined to turn my attention to a different game. I love COD4, but the thought of working my way up through the ranks again is nothing short of nauseating. Fix it Activision.

I have had no problems and I dont know of anyone else who has. it must be pretty rare considering the writer of the article and “anthony” are the only ones….. and last time i checked between ps3, xbox, and pc there are well over 5 million online players. 5,000,000 people - 2 unhappy = 4,999,998 happy players…… but i guess you cant please everyone.
Jan 2, 2008 at 10:16 am
Hmm, this has only happened to me once, and that was when i joined a Tournament server for my clan and it was running a Mod that changed loads of the rank loadout.
CoD4 uses a system where if the server is running a dedicated mod, it will reset the rank and start a fresh. However your normal profile is located in:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles (typical installation)
So check there first and see if your named profile folder is in there. If it is, then the profile is fine, the game is just loading another mod as default. So check if there are any other folder in the:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Main
or in the
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Mods Section, delete those and it should load the normal game as default.
Jan 4, 2008 at 3:00 pm
When I install, it is not installing a players folder. If someone knows what is wrong or can help please email me at drackmire@gmail.com
Jan 4, 2008 at 3:43 pm
It’s not installing a “Players” folder because you have to go into the game and create a profile first.
Then CoD4 will create a folder for your profiles.
Jan 4, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Ah but that’s the funny part. I have a profile created. I have completed the Single Player game, and achieved up to level 30 in multiplayer. There is still no players folder.
Jan 4, 2008 at 10:57 pm
So I’m kind of at a loss as to what to do.
Jan 5, 2008 at 9:26 am
I sent you another email with the only solution there could be (to my knoweledge) i’ve done a fair bit of modding and have over 5 servers for CoDUO and CoD4 so i know whats needed as an admin. But if this doesn’t solve the problem then it’s something you would have to contact Activision support about, and maybe the profiles may become more stable in the 1.5 release.
Jan 9, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Just lost my profile!
Starting over, - but if it happens again i’m dumping this COD4.
Jan 10, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Same shit happened to me.
It happened to me when I quited the game when I just turned level 17. I had to check my Xfire.
When I wanted to join the game via Xfire the game started and then all of the sudden my profile was gone and asked me to create a new one.
I was really upset cuz I just got level 17 and unlocked many cool new challenges.
This bug definitly needs to be fixed!
Jan 12, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I have just had the same problem, but on Xbox 360.
I played a match and got promoted to Level 39. Shut down and put in Halo3 to play with the wife.
When I put COD4 back in and joined back to live, my Rank was 13 and it says I have only played 4 hours. If anyone knows activisions contact information, I would like to give them a piece of my mind as well.
Jan 12, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Same thing happened to me. This really sucks. I don’t feel like working my way back up again.
Jan 12, 2008 at 10:55 pm
The same thing has happened to me three times made it to 21 it dropped me to 6, made it back to 28 dropped me to 9, then today made it to 31 unlocked everthing for my m4 all bootcamp ect. dropped back to 9. Until I know that this issue is fixed halo 3 is were I’ll be at. Sad the game is amazing but the resets is just too much.
Jan 13, 2008 at 12:23 am
hey,
i have exatually the same problem. But to me it have happend two times, the first time i got up to rank 27 and seacond time rank 25. so this is so wired. =S
But, it trust me that so many have this problem, because then it has to be solved by som1 to the end.
Jan 14, 2008 at 6:08 pm
My problem got solved by turning off User Account Control under Windows Vista.
I think the game deletes the profile when you exit the game, and creates a new one updated with the latest stats.
For some reason UAC DOES allow the game to delete the profile folder, but DOESN’T allow to let the game create a new folder with the updated profile in it.
Nevertheless, I’m still back-upping my profile in case it happens again!
Jan 15, 2008 at 8:56 am
I think that you are onto something there extensa. My problem seemed to occur after I activated UAC.
It hasn’t happened since, but I have not played in a while so I cannot be certain.
Jan 16, 2008 at 5:34 pm
OMFG MY PROFILE HAS ALSO JUST RANDOMLY DISAPEARED!! WOT SHUD I DO?? :’(
Jan 16, 2008 at 5:36 pm
my profile just disapeared and it was the same day i turned off User Account Control :’( is there any way of getting it back?
Jan 17, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Henryyy,
there is no way of getting your profile back
Cuz its deleted permantly and isn’t being moved to the recycle bin.
So you have to start all over again!

Today I thought mine was deleted too, I have Vista and also had just turned off User Account Control. I started the game up and my profile was missing, I was pretty scared for a moment, cuz I am trying to get the gold ak and had completed quite a few of the assault rifle challenges. So I exited the game, checked C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles and my profile was not in there… But if you guys remember Vista has the Compatibility Files button…well I pressed it and there was my profile safe and sound, so I just copied it and put it back in the regular files, and I was back to my old profile with no worries. Not sure if this will work for you but Compatibility Files is part of Vista so I’m sorry if it doesn’t help you with Xp. Hope this helps some of you!
Jan 19, 2008 at 12:49 pm
UGH hey, i just got a new comp SPECIFICALLY FOR COD4 lol. and i made a new profile for me on the computer, when before i had been playing cod4 on my dads vista profile, when i made my profile on vista and opened cod4, my profile was gone, does anyone know how to get my profile over to my vista profile, or will i just have to log onto the other account any time i want to play, i had alot of stuff unlocked too >.
Jan 20, 2008 at 2:00 am
I was at level 55 commander with 3/4 of the gun challenges fully completed. over 100 hrs of gameplay. lost. a little part of me just died. if anyone is reading this who still has there profile, could you put it up somewhere online to dl? that is the only solution i can think of right now, because it looks like activision isnt doing sht to fix the problem.
Jan 20, 2008 at 6:28 pm
For some reason my profiles folder is missing…i have a profile on COD4 but no folder. Id really like to back it up and to put it on my other computer but idk how seeing as its not there.
Jan 21, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Thank you so much Joy.
This worked 100%, I cannot appreciate how thankful I am.
I didn’t even know what that compatibility file was.
Everyone try this whose file is no longer in that folder, also I did just recently turn off UAC
Jan 23, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Right click the icon you use to open COD4 Multiplayer and click “Properties”. Select the “Compatability” tab and make sure you don’t have “Run this program as an admin” selected.
I had selected it due to an online tip because PunkBuster would randomly kick me for faulty reasons. Turns out when I did this, the game didn’t recognize the profile I’d created with my user.
I was terrified of losing my Brigadier General II. -.-
Jan 25, 2008 at 1:42 pm
If I was to format my PC, which I will be doing soon, what file/folder/files would I need to backup so that I can keep my profile?
Jan 31, 2008 at 6:18 am
joy is the MAN of the hour …. so i remain commander..lol…if u have vista u can retreive ur profile if ur thinkin u have lost it…go to the main folder of the cod4 and then click the compatibility files button that shows up in the top bar when ur in this directory…find ur old profile their and copy it … now paste it in the original players directory n u have it bk….peace
Feb 3, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I am able to find the files in the players folder, but I don’t know where to paste the file once i’ve found it. I’ve tried pasting it in the main folder, re-pasting it in the players folder, and several other things… also, theres a new file thats called “mpdata.corrupt” thats in the players folder and i dont know what the heck to do with that… if you could explain this to me thatd be great
Feb 5, 2008 at 4:19 am
whats the Compatibility Files button? wheres it located i just turned off UAC and my profiles gone and no clue where the Compatibility Files button is :S
Feb 5, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Thanks for the compability Trick.
Worked fine for me
- I pressed the compability button, and suddenly I could see those missing folders, and I was able to put my old profile from my XP 32-bit into my Vista 64-bit ( I just upgraded, but kept the two OS on each its own hard disk).
Its really simple to find - but tough to explain. Just take a good look at your various option, when you have opened the folder descirbed in the above post.
Best regards

Feb 7, 2008 at 9:25 pm
This happened to me with Vista and it is related to turning off or on the UAC, I did however find the hidden files using the compatibality function copied and replaced. A OK.
Feb 9, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Hey guys i had this but luckily i had been using a great program called “Call of duty 4 Profile backup”.
i was level 55 with 2/4 gold weapons. had to go back to 47 cos i got bored of backing up. but now each time i come off i quickly run this program (takes 30 seconds max). It’s been incredibly helpful to me.
You can download it at
http://files.filefront.com/Call+of+Duty+4+Backup+092/;9106524;/fileinfo.html
Hope this helps

Hi, when I first tried to find the player profile folder it was only hidden but if I enabled see hidden folders it was easily found. Now my problem is that I have two profiles but only one is in the folder but they both still work! What I want to know is where is the other profile located?
Feb 13, 2008 at 3:06 am
If your using Vista, I found the solution. This “”" happens to me: I lost my profile. I was pissed off because I am lvl 41 with almost 28 hours of multiplayer gaming. Anyway, I lost my profile after desactivating the UAC. So, I reactivate it, reboot my computer and boot cod4 and ABRACADABRA my profile reappear. I screamed so hard (full of joy) that everyone heard me lol. So if you’re under vista this should solve the mystery of the dissapearing cod4 profile :)…sorry for those that are under XP and have this problem
Feb 14, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Many thanks for the compatibility files tip - you have saved my life!
Feb 17, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Dude AwayToSlay, thanks man I turned my UAC off too. How frustrating…. >
Feb 21, 2008 at 7:22 am
My files were gone to!
I tried the compatibility files thingy ( using vista and have UAC turned of.. ) I can see the files, but when starting COD4 i still see no profile
what do i have to do?
Mar 3, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Control Panel >> User Accounts >> Turn User account control on or off >> Select “Use user account control…” <<
Vista stores memory differently than xp.. for some reason disabling this setting often results in the loss of COD4 profiles. Go figure
Mar 5, 2008 at 3:01 pm
The same thing happened to me about the same distance into the game. I ran a system restore and restored to the last date that everything was working correctly. That did the trick. Check and see if you have a restore point that you can restore to.
Mar 7, 2008 at 2:01 pm
My account and my sister’s accounts were both deleted too. From what I understand is Infinity Ward or who ever is in control of the servers reset anyone who has ever participated in a stat padding server ie. FFA on Shipment with 50 people. Apparently if you email them sincerly they will give your account back. Thats just what I was told though.
Mar 7, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Mystery Solved!!! I’m still hosed though. I turned on UAC before I started playing COD4 multiplayer so that I could play FighterAce under Vista. Then I start playing COD4 MP, but I’m getting BSOD’s that are related to User Account Control. I turn UAC off and I lose my COD4 profile. I turn it back on and I’ve got it back. I’ve gone through the copy and paste using the “Compatability” workaround to find the files, but no matter what I do, COD4 will not load the profile with UAC turned off!!!!! If anyone has seen anything similar to this, I’d love to hear from you.
Mar 9, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Good Tip… Compatability Files…. Who’da thunk?
Mar 14, 2008 at 2:31 am
yea same thing happened to me just today…i was a 5 star at level 55 and when i turned it back on…i was at level 1 lol omg i couldnt belive it..and now im at a loss i have no idea wut to do…PISSED >x I
Mar 16, 2008 at 10:41 am
I was never able to get it working with UAC turned off, so I reloaded the whole system on a different hard drive. UAC was causing all kinds of other problems. In the end, I just said screw it and started over from level 1. I haven’t had a single BSOD while playing CoD4 since the reload, but make damn sure that I back up my MP profile data daily!!!

Apr 5, 2008 at 7:32 pm
This just happened to me and I’m &*$(# pissed!
I payed the full 50.00 for this piece of crap that needs a patch every few weeks, and now just erases my profile whenever it feels like it. This is twice now, and I think it’s time to move on to a gaming company who knows what they are doing. This is bull.
Apr 11, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I reformatted but before I did I use Steam to play COD4 and Steam has a option to back up your games so I backuped up cod4 and guess what!!! It just back up the game and none of my profiles WTF, where my lvl 54 profile fuck!!?? Fuck you steam and your back up, this shit gotta be fixed. I had over 100hrs on that profile!!!!!!!!
Apr 15, 2008 at 4:44 am
Anyone have a fix for XP???!
I was on 55 had 1 of golden guns, but my stats were amazing. Im in a good clan and play matches weekly. I played yesterday and got the error, then my profile reset itself. I then managed to get to level 5. But my beloved M4 i do not have anymore!! Such a fukin gay thing. They should warn against this or just encrypt the file so that it cant be deleted!! easy fix!! System restore?
Apr 17, 2008 at 3:35 pm
COMPATIBILITY FILES
-choose this button in your cod4 folder
voila, all ur stuff will be there.
DONT DISABLE UAC, vista gets mad
BIG PROPS TO JOY!!!!!!
May 7, 2008 at 12:27 am
We ran into the UAC problem before when my son was on level 25. I thought he was going to cry when he lost it and when I fixed it. This time he was on lvl 55 and only needed the gold ak. The profiles just disappeared. I did searches, check the virtual store (even though the UAC settings hadn’t changed) but they were nowhere to be found. I really mean they were gone. After searching the web I stumbled across the solution in windows help of all places. Here’s what I did.
1) Go to C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players and you will see a folder called profiles. If you have UAC you can get to the right spot by going to C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare and clicking the compatibility files button.
2) right click on profiles and go to properties
3) click the previous versions tab
4) you can open the various versions and see which one you want
5) the restore button was grayed out so I used the copy button to copy the one I want to my documents.
6) I then copied the contents of the newly restored profiles folder in my documents to the correct location and bam I had my lvl 25 back and my son had his lvl 55 back with all it’s golden glory.
When he went to bed I told him there wasn’t much hope so he should be pretty happy tomorrow!

I had my profile deleted after, when trying to get into a server after installing patch 1.5, the game took it upon itself to install ome sort of mod. It had a green status of download bar. changed account to my own account cos i was on my bro’s. My profile was gone. I tried the compatability files thing and system restore, but nope still nothing. The names of my profiles are still there but all the xp and rank etc have all been reset. very good game but I think this has made me lose interest. just bought frontlines feul of war so might just keep going with that. Still, a very sad situation indeed.
Jun 5, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Neil, I tried system restore but that didn’t work either. Did you try the solution I posted above.
Jun 7, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I can’t see the previous versions tab, but thanks for helping anyhoo. I read some where about how the game might have run using a mod as default. Anyone got any clues? Ive tried copying and pasting the ones from compatability files to the original one but no success. Maybe my profiles still out there, lost in my computer lol. I started a new one anyway lol. thats what computer game addiction is all about these days haha.
Jun 13, 2008 at 8:55 pm
I lost my 55 account. Any idea’s on how to fix this on XP Pro? I mean this seems extremely petty of Activision; it’s not like we are asking for a hack, just that the game actually work. Get on the ball Activision, you are loosing customers.

i am now actually gutted. I started againand got to lvl 32 and that stupid screen came up saying downloading and had a green bar for the progress. Everytime that comes up. The comment made by Joy also worked for me, thanks mate your a star!
Jun 30, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Does Level 55 or 32 or 925 really matter when it comes down to it??? You’re not harder to kill just because you have a golden bb-gun. Better than half the choads that play online are level 55 and still using the frikkin RPD or the Saw!!! You get those on level 1 and 2!!! I create a new profile at least once a week, and I’m winning games right from the start! Boo-hoo, so you have to start over….maybe you should consider backing up your profile….or….god forbid….TURN OFF UAC AND REINSTALL THE DANG GAME SO IT DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN!!!! I’m sure that you can live without that Pink Cammo M-60 with an ACOG scope that you’re camping with for a couple of weeks! Oh yeah…..and it’s all Activisions fault, of course!
Jul 3, 2008 at 7:36 am
this happened to a few times, i reach level 31 then lost my profile, then the next time i reached level 30, the same thing, then i got the mod pezbot, i was level 49, lost it all because i installed Vista, but when i started to play it again i reached level 43, i then restarted my pc and lost my whole profile, i mean WTF!?!!, activision should really release a fix for this
Jul 3, 2008 at 7:43 am
oh and thank joy for that vista fix, it really helps
Jul 5, 2008 at 8:27 am
I got up to level 42 and the game askes me do i want to update i say yes i downloaded update 1.1 up to 1.7. Then i backed up my profile and instaled the updates. Icould only play on 1.5 servers so i reinstalled the game put the profiles in and it ses im level 1. after that i put my brothers profile on my pc. he’s level 38 and on my pc it ses he’s level 1 i tried this a lots of times and it still does not work. please if anyone knowes how to fix my problem tell me.
Jul 6, 2008 at 4:04 pm
i dont think you ppl realize its compleatly diffrent in windows vista its like COD4 chose not to put profiles in the folder i even pasted my old one in their and it still does not work i can not find the original profiles anywhere and those of you running XP have nothing to say im talking about VISTA!!!!! not XP so if you have no experince with vista then just dont say anything where is the damn profiles in COD4 for vista it is not their trust me im not an amatur
Jul 6, 2008 at 4:06 pm
oh by the way i have a backup of my profile and for you saying boo hoo itsx not about beeing harder to kill its about haveing all the weapons availibul to you DUH!
Jul 6, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I guess you didn’t notice the sarcasm dripping from my comments….boy do i feel silly! IceWolf, if you read the thread you would have found the answer to your problem. Some of the nice people here have been very helpful in pointing out that it’s not in your Windows profile (in Vista, or XP for that matter.) Vista’s “User Account Control” feature creates a virtual store where program data is written to protect the actual program files from being corrupted, either by users or by malware. Your CoD4 “profile” is not written to your Windows User Profile (as it is with other games like Rainbow Six Vegas or Crysis,) nor is it in the Activision program files directory. When you navigate to the program files/Activision folder, a button up on the toolbar will appear that says “Compatability Files.” When you click that button it takes you to the Virtual Store directory where you will see what appears to be a replica of the Program Files directory. Therein lies your CoD4 profiles in the Activision folder. UAC is simply a way of protecting your operating system and program files from malware/spyware, etc. Disabling UAC and reinstalling CoD4 is the easiest fix to avoid problems in the future, but only if you have the necessary system protection to make up for having UAC turned off. As a Windows sysad / MCSE, it’s the first thing I disable on my system after a clean Vista install, but that’s just me. Granted, Activision could have / should have mentioned this fact to help Vista users, but ultimately, it’s just a new feature in Vista (a bloated pig of an OS) that caught the masses with their pants down. Hope that points you in the right direction IceWolf.
Jul 10, 2008 at 10:26 am
And if you would have read the thread mate, you wouldve realised that alot of people are having this happen with XP! Sooooooo is there a fix, or isnt there!!
Aug 9, 2008 at 10:42 am

i was shocked^^ but now im fine:D
your the man(y)
Sep 2, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Hey, guys. I turned off the User Account Control on Vista, Because it was being a twat. This without a doubt lost my profile, because I was playing COD4 5 mins before. I turned UAC back on and my profile reappeared, bringing me back up to Level 41, which I was delighted with cos I was dreading starting over again. Therefore I thoroughly suggest if you have this problem, to swich UAC back on if you turned it off and lost your profile. I would like to thank everyone for posting their comments as they have been most useful and I posted mine to emphasise that activating the UAC application will indeed return your profile
Thanks once again.
Pete

Ok, I just read over all of this, and I’m having an issue (with or without UAC). I play 3 different mods of COD4, the main, K3 and AWE4. My normal cod4 profile is still fine, but all my mod profiles have reset. I was 55 in K3 and 49 in AWE4. I have no idea what to do, what happened or how to get it back. Any suggestions or has this happened to any of yall?
Thanks for your time,
Jason

ii had the same problem of lost rankings in my game as well
but due to xp the uac didn’t apply
what i noticed was a mpdata.corrupt on playing around with it i deleted the new mpdata and removed the (.corrupt)
section of the mpdata.corrupt and my rankings came back

Anyone know the solution to vista 32? I’ve had cod4 for a year and play it plenty. The last 2 weeks since christmas I haven’t played because I’ve been playing WAW. As soon as I tried to go back to cod4 today all of a sudden my profile with 20 thousand kills was gone :(. Firas’ solution doesn’t work for me because there is no APPDATA folder. Anyone?

If your using Vista, I found the solution. This “”” happens to me: I lost my profile. So if you’re under vista this should solve the mystery of the dissapearing cod4 profile :)…sorry for those that are under XP and have this problem
all i add to do was copy and paste to cod4 folder all stats are back

sud99’s solution is correct, I came on to post the same thing. Turn UAV on and leave it on. Some may tell you there are benefits to turning it off.. they’re doing it so you lose your profile and freak out. Just like those guys who say ALT+F4 is the fix to everything… know what I mean? Put UAV on and leave it on.

EDIT: UAC… not UAV.

Yeah it sucks… I was rank 55, with over 1000 headshots, almost 100 hours gameplay, and the golden dragonov when my profile just deleted itself… luckily i have it backed up somewhere on my other partition…

Hi people,
add 1 to the counter of ‘buttfucked players’, because it happened to me too.
Rank: level 55
Kills: 18324
Headshots: 2275
Deaths: 20851
Time Played: 10 days 10 hours 45 minutes
When I searched for help, I got to this page.
Nevertheless, it seemed hopeless, because I haven’t changed UAC since I got my PC. It was still ‘on’.
Second, I had immediately created a new profile, under the same name as the previous. So I got REALLY scared, that something had come in conflict with one another, so that I definitely lost everything.
Then, I tried your solution with not much hope, but too see if it would work.
I turned UAC ‘off’, and rebooted
I turned UAC ‘on’, and rebooted
Tadaaam, old profile restored! Ow yeah!
If you wanna see a +20 year-old guy cry, you just missed it ^^
thanks guys

Thought my son deleted my COD4 profile……Lvl 44 turns out the unchecking “run as administrator” and clicking on compatibility files button while in C:\Program files x86\Activsion\Call of Duty4-Modern Warfare did the trick! Was ready to give up on COD4 ,way to many hours to start over again. Oh yeah I am running Vista….the only reason I messed with setting to begin with is I have been having issues with Battlefield 1942 “Forgotten Hope” mod
