With the monitor size war that we are currently seeing in Japan, one could be forgiven for thinking that the future is big in flat screen technology. I do not think that this is the case at all. Most of the massive monitors on the market are too big for regular homes and the price tags will only fall so far. Enormous panels cost a lot of money.
This concept by Westinghouse is much more interesting. Instead of building the biggest monitor on the market, they have opted for higher definition, Quad Full HD (3840 x 2160) to be precise. This 56-inch display packs in a total of 8.3 million pixels. If the $50,000 price tag scares you, you might opt for the puny 47-inch model that will slug you a lazy $10,000. The 47-incher is not so impressive in the stats department it is a Quad HD (2560 x 1440) with a less impressive 3.7 million pixels.
These won’t be much good for TV, you will have to downscale for most things, but have a look how sweet Crysis looks on this bad boy. Look at that and remember how much 50-inch old school plasmas cost 10 years ago. Screens like this are going to be the norm one day.
