The Da Vinci is a truly exceptional surgical robot that has managed to incorporate the very latest research coming out of the Imperial College London. New technology has been added to the Da Vinci in the form of an attachment that tracks the surgeons eyes. Through this attachment, the surgeon will be able to control the robot’s field of view via the movements of his or her eyes. In other words, the robot looks where the surgeon is looking.
In addition, the robot incorporates some highly sophisticated software, it combines the live image that the surgeon sees with scans taken of the patient prior to surgery to create an interactive three-dimensional map. This will reduce the risk of any unnecessary cutting. To improve the accuracy of the surgeon when cutting in parts of the body that move, it can present a static image. This is done by syncing the cutting with the beat of the patient’s heart. The robot will automatically pause during heartbeats.
Whereas many people thought the Da Vinci something of a novelty, it really has the potential to provide valuable assistance during surgical procedures; one cannot help but speculate how much longer the surgeon will even be part of the equation.
