Knife Resistant, no; Slash Resistant, yes; It’s the Nihon Uni Knife ShirtStumble This

knife-shirt.jpg

New from the Nihon Uni company is a T-shirt that can protect you from slashing attacks. There have been a number of slashing attacks on school kids and convenience store clerks reported in the news of late, so presumably Nihon Uni saw Yen signs. Blade resistant clothing is not new. There are a number of companies that produce it. Nihon Uni has made theirs out of polyethylene and it is being billed as “three times as strong as cotton.” (Doesn’t that just fill you with confidence).

I don’t know where everyone stands on walking around expecting the worst from everyone. The marketing really does seem to be based on little more than fear mongering. These are not aimed at people that are likely to encounter a knife attack; they are aimed at regular folks and overly protective parents. You know, the sort of mother that makes her kid wear a crash helmet for running around the house. How fun is living if all you do is about preventing yourself from accidentally dying?

Do people get attacked with knives? Yes. Does it happen often? No. The chances of being attacked with a knife are minimal, unless you are a bouncer, police officer or keep lousy company. I do not see the point in sending your kid to school or going to work in knife resistant clothing. For one thing, it is expensive, for another you probably have just as much chance of being struck by lightning. If you are going to wear a knife resistant shirt, you best make sure that you purchase some rubber galoshes to wear everyday to prevent accidental electrocution.

These things range from $200 – $500 depending, I am assuming, on the options. Over-concerned parents could just drive their kids to school, but I fear that would be too sensible.

On the 24 of may 2008 I ordered a longsleeved sweater from the company in Japan. It was quite expensive. It cost
about $300, include shipping to Norway. I payed via PayPal.

    Their home page is http://www.nihon-uni.co.jp
    or http://www.nihon-uni.co.jp/profile/index.html

I used http://translate.google.com/translate_t to translate the page, and I sent an email to info@nihon-uni.co.jp and they answered me in english.
I got an answer on email from Tetsuya Yoneda (yoneda@nihon-uni.co.jp) and he took my order.

On the 3 of june 2008 I received the cut-resistant sweater, included a few sample textiles, included a CD with information.
The sweaters arms was a bit to short for me, but it felt nice and cool(in temperature) on my body, and was light
enough. I was a little bit thicker than a normal T-shirt.

I am sorry to say that I am really disappointed about the product.
I tried to cut the sample textiles with a scissor, and it cut right through it.
I layed the sample textile on a table and cut right trough it with an medium
sharp kitchenknife(the kind one uses to cut slices of bread). It was a little bit tougher than an ordinary cloth, but not much.

I dont recommend the product at all, at least not for protection.

By the way, the picture on this page is not what the sweater looks like. It looks like a normal sweater, and you cant really see the difference between the sweater from Nihon-Uni and any other normal sweater.

    S. From Norway.
