Reef Rider, Sea Scooter Action on a BudgetStumble This

Reef Rider
On the surface the Reef Rider sea scooter looks pretty cool, but believe me there is one very big catch. It can only go down as deep as three meters, which makes it next to useless for recreational diving. That is perhaps the compromise that you have to make for buying such a cheap sea scooter. On the other hand, there is plenty of good snorkeling to be had at those depths and if you are looking for something that you can mess around with in very shallow dives it could be good.

If you don’t mind voiding the warranty and are a confident enough diver that you are not going to panic if your scooter dies, you could see how it works at slightly deeper depths. Worst case scenario, the seals break the equipment dies and your dive is ruined. Best case scenario, you discover that it actually goes a few meters deeper and you get a little bit more functionality out of the Reef Rider.

There are some divers that scorn those that use scooters and while I have never felt the need, I think that extra bit of boost could be nice when you are diving in strong currents. For such applications, I think you would want something a little bit more dependable than this.

Features:
* Scoot around in the sea or pool with this on and underwater scooter.
* The Reef Rider has an easy to use trigger operation to get scooting.
* Dives to depths of up to 3 metres.
* Travels at a speed of up to 2.2mph.
* For safety there is an auto-cut off and a protective grill over the propeller.
* Requires a mains adaptor for charging (UK adaptor included), a full charge equals a run time of 50mins.
* Suitable for ages 8 years+.
* Size: 70 x 25cm.

Price: Approximately $200 from IWOOT

    “Worst case scenario, the seals break the equipment dies and your dive is ruined” - um, ever seen (or tried to open) a saltwater flooded battery compartment? If the MFG says this thing is good for only 3m, I wouldn’t trust it beyond 2m… Cheap is cheap.

    I believe that I pointed out that the equipment would be ruined if the seals break.
