F1 vehicles from 2009 will incorporate a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) in an attempt to make the sport greener and bring F1 in line with modern passenger vehicle technology. KERS is a type of hybrid power system that does not make use of batteries. It stores kinetic energy from braking in a high RPM flywheel which will then feed back to the car during acceleration.
Why the changes? Formula One has always been about the bleeding edge of automobile technology. As people become more environmentally-sensitive, the demand for high-powered gas guzzlers is likely to start diminishing; hence, the range of high-economy luxury vehicles. If F1 is really to represent the latest and greatest in automotive engineering, then it has to embrace the changing direction of the industry. [Pop Sci]
