Fujitsu Cuts Down Trees to Make a Laptop

Fujitsu WoodShell

Wood is not a material that one commonly associates with laptops; it has a few disadvantages over modern plastics. Wood is less durable, it does not conduct heat very well and is more costly to machine. Plastics, on the other hand, are cheap, easy to work with and made for mass production; they also tend to be a lot lighter. There are people out there that would prefer an environmentally conscious design to a cheap one; these are the people that Fujitsu is aiming squarely at with their Woodshell concept.

Green sells, and the Woodshell looks quite good which is sure to make it a winning product, should it ever see production. Wood can be just as environmentally unfriendly as plastics, you have to cut down trees to get it, so hopefully Fujitsu will take the necessary steps to ensure that they are purchasing their wood from a reputable source.

As for me, I don’t see any wooden PCs in my immediate future, plastic has done well by me in the past.
