Optoma’s HD80 projector shows that projector manufacturers just might be feeling the pinch from bigger, cheaper flat screen televisions. The HD80 will pump out 1080p and the 2.35:1 aspect ratio will let you see your favorite films at the size which the director intended them to be shown; no more black bars on the top or bottom of the screen.
Not so long ago, this sort of technology would have hit you for a pretty penny; with the Optoma HD80, however, it will set you back just $2,700. At that price, you will have to compromise on some of the conveniences of more expensive models, but the quality is solid. You will be more restricted in your mounting options. The HD80 does well from a ceiling but not so well from a table. You will also have to forgo motorized zoom and focus, not really a big deal with a ceiling mount, as you are unlikely to need to move it once it is set up.
