Rumor: Apple Ordering 24-25 Million 3G iPhones

Commercial Times, a Chinese newspaper, reports that Apple has placed orders for a total of 24-25 million 3G iPhones. That figure includes 3 million models that are set to ship in June. Their sources are the component manufacturers in Taiwan, so there is every reason to for them to be believed.

Some might be skeptical as to whether Apple can shift 24-25 million units over the lifespan of the product. The first iPhone fell short of 6 million in sales, so a 400% increase in production seems a little much. When you consider, however, the countries that have yet to adopt the iPhone, you get a sense that it just might be achievable. Russia has yet to get an official model, while Italy has already signed a deal. Belgium and Australia are also making preparations for their own launches.

iPhone rumors have been gaining steam in Japan, where the phone would be likely to be locked to one carrier (all phones here are). Lack of true 3G functionality is what likely prevented the launch of the first iPhone in Japan. [Apple Insider]
