DIY: Star Wars Minifig Joule Thief ProjectStumble This

Minifig Joule ThiefThis DIY project is not for the faint of heart or the shaky of hand. It involves building a Joule thief inside a minifig. The result is a Storm Trooper with a visor that lights up in a most awesome shade of red. While on the surface this project looks to be quite simple, it requires feats of manual dexterity that are impossible for many people and extremely difficult for most others.

Onkelond details what is required for the build:

  • One minifig, Onkelond recommends the Storm Trooper as the head makes easier work of concealing electronics.
  • 30 cm of 0.15 mm isolated copper wire.
  • 1k ohm SMD resistor.
  • A general purpose switching SMD transistor.
  • A red SMD LED.
  • A small ferrite bead, 6 mm outer diameter.
  • A miniature push button.
  • A piece of thin copper foil for battery terminals (I got this piece from a PCB).
  • A piece of thick paper to mount behind the LED in the helmet.
  • A small piece of flexible dark red plastic film to go in front of the LED.

Other than that you are going to need a whole lot of patience. The thing about minfigs is that they are small and any electronics that are going to go in them are thus going to be tiny. See the Flickr Gallery on the project for more details. [Make]
