Dutch Build the First Solar-Powered SpeedboatStumble This

Czeers MK1

It is not too often that we associate solar powered with anything fast and or furious, but perhaps it is time that we start. The Czeers MK1 is a 10-meter vessel covered in photovoltaic cells that is capable of hitting speeds of up to 30 knots (55.5 km/ph to you non-nautical folks out there). While there are certainly faster boats on the water, those tend to use obscene amounts of fuel.

Video after the jump.

The solar-powered Czeers MK1 is naturally going to be a lot quieter than its gas guzzling cousins, which would make it great for sneaking up over fish (though there is limited space to put them if you catch them. I would like to see a similar model with little bit more space for passengers, even if it did mean sacrificing some speed. Speedboats are so limited in what they are able to do, but if this had a little extra space, it could do so much more.

Looking at the images, I am seeing a tremendous amount of what looks to be carbon fiber. That and all of the plush leather are likely to push the price out of this world, but if you have a big bank balance, it would be an exciting boat to own. I think that this is an excellent start for solar boating.

    Okay, simple math here:
    Area X Solar Radiation
    10m x 3m = 30m^2 *1000 W/m^2 = 30kW == 40hp

    Conversion efficiencies of the best solar powered cars are about 25% So 10hp? Hardly a “speedboat”, but I did enjoy my old Evinrude 9.9hp on the Zodiac.

    [...] A nice change from electric cars (not that we get tired of them)…the Czeers MK1 is a sweet solar powered electric boat. This beautiful aquatic vehicle is capable of speeds of 30 Knots (34Mph). It seems like a very smart idea going right to solar instead of just electric boats seeing that most boats sit in direct sunlight most of their life. You could basically boat to your hearts content and never feel guilty or hurtin’ on the wallet. Now I have another thing on my list that I want to get when I hit the lottery =) read more here [...]

    If you know anything of solar power speed boats, you know that THIS SPEED boat was NOT the first SOLAR powered speed boat.

    As a matter of fact, the FIRST SOLAR powered speed boat was the boat in the movie, “The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen” starring Sean Connery. The boat was called The Nauticus and was owned by Captain Nemo. :P

    Ok…now I’m just being silly.

    At any rate, yeah, it’s a cool boat indeed. (Not the Nauticus, as that movie SUCKED!)

What a neat way to take advantage of all that sunlight and still provide power. “The Czeers MK1 is a 10-meter vessel covered in photovoltaic cells that is capable of hitting speeds of up to 30 knots (55.5 km/ph to you non-nautical folks out there). I think people are now looking too hard to find things to make “green”. How much pollution does all the world personal boats emit each year? Answer: Not enough to care. And if it isn’t cheaper, I’m sure no one else is going to either.

    Just my 2 cents…
