USB Net ShareStation

IOGear’s USB Net ShareStation is a nice halfway house on the way to wireless USB freedom. It is essentially a USB hub that allows device sharing over a wireless network. Up to four devices can be shared from a single hub. It connects to a network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable. What is more, you can enjoy the full range of use of Multi-Function Printers from any computer on the network

A few days ago we looked at a 4-port USB switching device which, though reasonably priced did not really cut the mustard as far as I was concerned. One reader did point out, however, that it had one significant advantage in certain networking situations and that was that it would allow access to the full range of functionalities on some devices which are lost in a standard network connection. I had not considered that and I felt it a good observation.

There was, however, something that still bugged me about the switch, which I did not detail and that is the mess of cabling you end up with when you have too many USB cables under the desk. This is where the USB Net ShareStation comes into its own. Sure, you are still going to need to wire it into your devices, but it makes the cable situation much more manageable and it offers full support for multi-function printers.

Price: $80 if you buy it directly from IOGear, which is a little steep, but considering the functionality that you are getting, some might consider it a worthy expense. As for me, I definitely want to get me one of these.
