Ion VCR2PC Digitizes Your Legacy Media

Ion VCR2PC
If you have a monstrous collection of VHS tapes that you would like to digitize before disposal, the Ion VCR 2 PC is one way of accomplishing the task. Basically, the VCR2PC is a video player with a USB out. You plug it into your computer and hit play and wait, wait and then wait some more for the video to finish playing. Isn’t it so much easier with digital media? While I phased out VHS from my collection long ago, there are plenty of people that can’t stand the thought of parting with all of their monstrous collections of tapes, something like this ought to help them make the job easier (though if you have 20,000 of them you might want to call some minions into action).

Price: $250

You can also look into the Neuros OSD for a simpler, cheaper way to record your VHS tapes.

The Neuros OSD is a different concept, replacing the PC part of the equation.

I am discouraged about the many reports of problems with the ION VCR2PC, though. I have the VHS tape and I have the PC and need something to connect them.

The VCR2PC does not work on my xp or vista machines. Will not work on the vista (HP portable) because the driver is invalid. Will not work on the xp Dell machine because the audio is crackly and the video has lines through it. Stay away from this product.

Could not get VCR2pc to work on my XP(would not burn)

I read the minimum requirements on the box before buying- just said ” NEED WINDOWS XP ” so I built a little machine JUST for this VRC2PC. I had to fight for a few days just to get the drivers and software to install – there is a built in SPYWARE program that connects on the internet ALL THE TIME, whether you are using the machine or not, reporting who knows what, so I had to remove all Anti spy ware, Anti- Malware, Anti -Virus, all Firewalls, all security programs…. Even then, the unit refused to read or store any VCR and I realized that the CHEAP , MONO sound VCR built in could only read MONO SOUND, not the STEREO sound on all my tapes, so that before I even got started, the VCR2PC was downgrading and destroying the information on the tapes!… Finally after fighting with the unit for a few days I went online and found in tiny print the REAL SPECIFICATIONS and minimum REQUIREMENTS, which required a MUCH faster and more powerful machine, so I used my own regular computer, that exceeded the specifications….. AGAIN, the spyware in the program, the poorly written installation and setup, the awkward and bizarre user SETTINGS, the cryptic choices for recording, the tremendous computing POWER needed to just get the unit to work at all, made setting up the VCR2PC beyond the capabilities of most users…. Finally, after a few days, and after destroying MY computer to remove ALL Firewalls, Anti Virus, Anti Malware, Anti Spyware etc, I got the unit to READ a VCR, and record to a file on my harddrive – destroying the nice Stereo sound, as it did so…. Then I tried to BURN, using a BRAND NEW, 22 Speed, Dual Layer DVD burner, and the software REFUSED to burn. It just did an infinite loop of ” CHECKING YOUR FILE”, and refused to burn…. In later searching the web for reviews, a few people have said that this unit ” WORKS “, but they are obviously NOT very technically minded or savvy, – not a SINGLE reviewer mentioned that, IF you get the unit to work at all, it will DESTROY your SOUND quality, and still not do a very good job of ” PRESERVING ” the image quality…. I have been working with electronics since the 1960′s and this unit is poorly designed, with a wretchedly CHEAP , MONO, VCR internally, and has wretchedly laid out SETTINGS and CONTROLS with CRYPTIC ” OPTIONS” that most home users would not even understand, let alone be able to ” CHOOSE FROM THE LIST OF OPTIONS BELOW”… Generally, the MISSING, ” REAL ” minimum specifications on the BOX, that “CUSTOMER” sees before purchasing, the fact that you cannot have ANY Anti Virus or Anti SPY ware running, or FIREWALLS ( if you unplug your computer from the internet, out of desperation, the spyware tries to connect every few SECONDS, effectively hanging your computer ! ! !) , the poor controls and options, etc etc etc make this a very poor investment – — you will be ” PRESERVING ” a low grade, poor sound, recording from a really CHEAP VCR…. not desirable at all… Buyer Beware! See my tiny website, kidbots.com for typical info on electronics…
