UltraCell, a California based company is currently working on a fuel cell for military applications which has been dubbed the XX25. With eight and a half ounces of concentrated methanol, the fuel cell is able to power a rugged military laptop for up to eight hours. The system can also be configured to run for extended periods of time from a tank of fuel.
While we humble civilians are starting to see the beginnings of this sort of technology, it will probably be a while before the XX25 and its ilk make their way into the local Walmart. Still it does give some hope as these sorts of non-sensitive military technology do tend to make it to the general market before to long, and if they have been subjected to extensive military testing first it is all the better to get a stable product.
