Modder Brett found himself a Flight Recorder on eBay and decided it would make an extremely cool Linux server. He gutted it, cleaned out all of the nasty, hazardous materials inside and installed a Mini-ITX with an 800MHz Via C3 CPU. It looks cool, but you can’t put a price on health.
Seriously folks, as cool as this case mod is, it should not be repeated; at least not with old-school flight recorders that use asbestos for insulation. There is no safe way to handle that stuff, it is deadly and it will come back and get you years later. While I definitely approve of the end result, it is just not worth the risk and anyone with mesothelioma from workplace exposure to asbestos will tell you the same.
If you are going to build something similar, make sure that you check the parts involved and do a little research as to what materials are contained within. If it is actually tagged with Hazardous Materials or something of the sort, it is usually best to leave it well alone. Some stuff just shouldn’t be cracked open.
