Cell Phone Eye-control and Other Assorted Craziness From Japan’s Docomo

Docomo Cell Phone Research
Japan’s NTT Docomo is working on what they call, “the cell phone of the future”. In the Docomo view, the future is a wearable cell phone that can be controlled with movements of different parts of the body. One idea involves a pair of headphones that detect electrical current that is produced by the movement of the eyeballs; roll your eyes up to turn up the volume, down to turn it down and twice to the right to fast forward.

There are a few other flavors to the technology, including a cell phone that is shaped like a ping-pong ball sized ring. It works by sending vibrations through your bones when you stick your fingers into your ears. There is also a wristwatch variation that is controlled through finger movements

While these ideas might sound wild and crazy at the moment, you have to wonder how far off functional wearable cell phones really are. Of course, we already see stuff like MP4 watches but nothing that could really be considered mainstream technology. The goal of the Docomo line is to blend in and to be inconspicuous and if they can make that happen, then it is bound to take off. [CNN]
