There are two new parts in the Lego Mindstorms NXT catalog that are going to get builders excited. First, there is an infrared link sensor that is set to make NXT robots interact with other robot kits and devices. The thought of building a robot that could control other Lego creations is exciting to say the least.
The other new addition, which is a little more expensive and a little less exciting, is an RFID sensor which will allow programmers to lock functionality of programs to specific RFID transponders.
In the words of the manufacturer:
Infrared Link Sensor for MINDSTORMS NXT!
Enhance your MINDSTORMS NXT creations with an Infrared Link Sensor! With 3 NXT-G blocks, you’ll be able to build robots that can communicate with other devices, including the MINDSTORMS RCX, LEGO IR remote-controlled trains, and LEGO Power Functions motors.
* Includes 1 Infrared Link Sensor.
* Does not include connector cable.RF ID Sensor for your MINDSTORMS NXT robots!
Another great MINDSTORMS NXT accessory for experienced programmers! Add an NXT-G program loop that needs a specific transponder to run. When you have the key transponder, only you can start the program – use multiple transponders to run multiple program paths!
* Includes sensor and 2 RF transponders!
* Does not include connector cable.
Now that I am a dad I am finding myself building Lego models much more often, but it will be a while before I delve into NXT territory. Price aside, this stuff takes too much time.
Prices: About $66 for the infrared link sensor and $80 for the RFID sensor and two transponders. [Thoughts From the Sidelines]
