Voodoo Omen, a Thirsty and Overpriced Gaming Beast From $7KStumble This

Voodoo Omen
Let me state categorically that there is no reason that anyone should want to drop seven large on a gaming desktop. The folks at Voodoo, however, beg to differ. They have brought the goods to the table; dropping in an Asus Striker Extreme II motherboard, you can drop in up to a 3.0GHz Core 2 Extreme Quad Core and up to 8GB of Corsair DDR3. Graphics are either SLI or CrossfireX and come in the form of liquid cooled GeForce 8800 Ultras or ATI Radeon HD2870s.

The case is the big selling point of the rig. It is constructed from strengthened aluminum with a brushed finish. The case sports a USB driven 7″ widescreen display, is 22-inches tall and weighs a disk herniating 45kg. Power supply is either 1150W air cooled or 1300W liquid cooled.

The Omen is an overengineered gaming monstrosity to be sure, but looking at the components, there is not a single thing in there that cannot be sourced elsewhere; which means that you are paying a big chunk of your money for a case and a brand. Half the fun of a gaming rig is building the thing yourself and a system of this caliber can almost certainly be had for around the $4000 mark depending on where you shop.

As to what $7,000 will get you out of all of the hardware variations that they list on site, I am not sure. That is where prices start from, so for a decent set of specs, you can be sure it will get a lot more expensive. Compare this to an Alienware ALX where you get a bit more hardware engineering thrown in and perhaps a few components that can’t easily be sourced elsewhere, as opposed to just a pretty box and you are left asking yourself why. Slightly more engineering in this chassis then the competitiors. It also features RGB LED lighting with a possible combination of 16.7 million colors, an internal light that works even when the PC is powered off and unplugged, ESA fan and temperature control for motherboard independent cooling, pump safety shutdown in case the pump fails, 480mm x 120mm dual-pass radiator, a secondary display that *does not* become disabled when the main video card requires full screen (try doing that with SLI/Crossfire without suffering a performance loss), and many, many other features…
