There are still plenty of good reasons to buy a standard HDD over an SSD. The Western Digital is Scorpio is one of them. The Scorpio Black lineup features some very capable 2.5″ hard disk drives that spin at 7,200 RPM. That is desktop speed and couple it with a 16MB cache and you have some impressive potential.
Features include:
- 7200RPM
- SATA 3 Gb/s interface
- 16Mb cache
- Storage capacities range from 80GB to 320GB
- IntelliSeek for low power consumption
- SecurePark
- ShockGuard
SSDs are good technology, but they are still massively overpriced in terms of the limited benefits that they provide. Not to mention the fact that magnetic HDDs still hold some impressive advantages. While the mechanical parts of an HDD can fail, the data can survive an enormous amount; the drive recovered from the Columbia is testament to that fact. SSDs will get there, but give it will take a year or two.
Price: By the looks of things, the 320GB model is going for $250.
