The first two editions of the Das Keyboard really stood out for the fact that the keys did not have labels on them. For serious coders and typists, this is not an issue, but lets face it; if you are looking for numbers and symbols, it can be pretty tough - more so if you are constantly switching between keyboard types. So the Das Keyboard crew relented and put labels on the keys for their latest model, the Das Keyboard Professional.
While I have yet to lay hands on one, the reviews make this look like something that I would buy. Like previous Das models, this is a keyboard without the bells and whistles. There are no media keys or macro keys here, it is not a gaming keyboard. Each key switch is gold plated which presumably adds to the distinctive and satisfying click that you can expect to hear at each keystroke. Presumably it has a bit of onboard memory, as it can register up to 12 simultaneous key presses.
The noise levels from this thing are reportedly such that it may not play nice with others. I like a bit of aural feedback from my keyboard and have used many a clicky keyboard in my time. Still, I can imagine that the tap, tap, tap would be pretty annoying to those that are forced to sit through it. If you have your own office or are looking for something to use at home it would be well suited to the task (but bear in mind that family members are just as prone to get upset about repetitive noises as co-workers).
The Das Keyboard Professional is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux systems and will set you back a pretty penny. I do a lot of typing and tend to spend more on my keyboards than most people. I have worn out more than one cheap board and don’t like the strain that cheap models put on my fingers. So far the best I have used is my Razer Lycosa, but I have owned a very nice Logitech wireless model. The Das Keyboard Professional is built with more demanding users in mind and the price reflects what they are likely to pay.
