Engineered Silence, A Patent to Quiet Noisy Jet EnginesStumble This

Jet engine silencer
Jet engines are noisy, in fact they are one of the things that are used to gauge dangerous noise levels. They are not quite as noisy as rock concerts but they are up there but they might not be for much longer thanks to one Dimitri Papamschou of the University of California. Earlier this year, Dimitry filed a patent for a jet engine silencer which works separating the air from the engine into two channels, a fast moving channel up top and a slow moving channel down the bottom; thus reducing turbulence and noise. The end result should be a 6 dB ground noise level.

Incidentally a jet in flight or landing, is a lot less noisy than a jet taking off. [New Scientist via DVICE ]
