iPhone Software Update Causes it to Brick Itself… TemporarilyStumble This

There is an apparent new problem with the iPhone 2.0 software update. Don’t panic, it is just a glitch but it does do a little to besmirch that squeaky clean Apple reputation. Rumor has it that the problem is due to the fact that the reactivation servers are over work. So you get your software update, but the phone does not reactivate afterwards. The problem is that all those iPhone users from around the world have DDOSed themselves.

If you are getting the “unknown error occurred (-4)” message, then you are going to need to attempt to re-establish connection with the iTunes store to reactivate your phone. According to Paul at One Digital Life, who took 3 hours to reactivate his phone:

To get it started again, click on something else in the iTunes sidebar like, “Music”, and then click on the iPhone again. Doing this makes iTunes try again. Unfortunately, you’ll have to keep doing this until it works.

Of course if you don’t want to sit around like a chump greasing up your multi-touch screen, you could always wait a few hours for the panicked masses to chill out. Go to bed, watch some television, use the Internet, play a game, talk to your families; who would have thought that there is life beyond a cell phone? [One Digital Life]

Indeed, iPhone is invading the marketplace! Good job to its developers. I’ve got one product you’ve just made and I must say, it’s the coolest I’ve ever had!
