Danish design student Andre Harley is the man behind the Seascout, a robotic, aquatic rescue vehicle that is designed to save swimmers that run into trouble in the sea. The Seascout, which contains internal lighting, a sunroof, and a radio system can be set to patrol randomly or in set programs and it will respond to distress signals sent out by wearable GPS units. The coolest thing by far is that Andre built his concept model using a radio controlled boat cut in half an a Lego Mindstorms kit.
I see a real potential for this sort of technology, especially in and around more popular beaches. The ocean is a complex environment and even the strongest swimmers can find themselves in trouble. Over seven thousand people drown each year and the fact is that technology like this probably could save some of them. [Andre Harley via DVice, Coolest Gadgets]
