Antec Skeleton Case – Good For Customization, Bad For Kids and PetsStumble This

I am loath to call the Antec Skeleton a case, I believe the correct term for this type of thing should be frame. It is an open case / frame that holds all of your components together without a top or sides so that nothing interferes with your airflow (or protects your components). There is space for two internal 3.5″ HDDs, 2 externally accessible 5 1/4″ bays and a PSU at the bottom of the case. Up top there is a sliding tray for the motherboard.

I like the idea of a skeleton case, but don’t care for the curves of Antec’s take on the concept. I would like to see something a little more modular, put a top on the case to give the components a little protection and side mount the great big fan that sits up top and make it basically square so that it can be stackable. That would give enormous advantages to serious builders and hardware testers, while also providing housing for homemade supercomputers like the Microwulf.

My verdict: this thing is good for someone that likes to swap their components around a lot, but probably not the best sort of set up if you are someone that has a lot of computers. A little more component protection would be nice. People with small children or pets that climb would do best to stay away from a case like this. Unless you use a modular power supply, you are going to end up with a rat’s nest of cables that are probably best left unseen.

If you want to see one in action, Tweak Town has done a build. [Acquire via Hackaday, Slash Gear]
