If the ho-hum line up of new notebooks wasn’t uninspiring enough on its own, the lack of Blu-ray is the icing on the cake. Why no Blu-ray?
Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It’s great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we’re waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.
A lukewarm excuse if ever I heard one. Blu-ray does jack up laptop prices quite a bit, but the least they could have done is include the technology as an option. I am assuming that by “the licensing of the tech is so complex,” translates roughly into “the technology is too damned expensive” and “takes off in the marketplace” translates into “gets a whole lot cheaper.”
Apple is playing it tight here and if you ask me a little too safe. If they want to really knock Windows of its perch, then they need to start being a little preemptive and go back to setting trends rather than following them. When they do make the jump to Blu-ray, and they will, then you can expect to see a truly revamped lineup and perhaps an Apple HTPC to boot. [Image source: Crunchgear]
