Prices of solid state disks (SSDs) still have a ways to fall before I am ready to part with my hard-earned dollars, but looking at the OCZ Vertex lineup, they are almost there. The 2.5″ SATAIIs have some pretty impressive specs, featuring 64MB of onboard cache, 200MB/sec read speeds, 160MB/sec write speeds. For those worried about degradation of NAND memory, there is a 1.5 million hour mean time before failure.
All that makes for a pretty solid overall package, but when it comes to SSDs, what most people are interested in is price. The 30GB, 60GB, 120GB or 250GB versions retail for $129, $249, $469, and $869, respectively. For practicality 60GB is probably the smallest I would consider and I would feel more comfortable with a 120GB. For that reason, I am going to hold off for just a little bit longer, until we see a 120GB going for around the $250 mark; but the prices are dropping, aren’t they? [OCZ Technology via Engadget]
