The GreenWheel is an interesting concept design that was developed by a group of scientists at MIT. It is a self-contained system that contains a motor, a generator and a battery that can be attached to a standard bike to give up to 20 miles of pedal free riding.
Electric bikes cost a fortune, and the cheapest power-assist alternatives rank pretty high on the embarrassing stakes, so it is nice to see something that, for a few hundred dollars, will turn any old bike into an easy commute. [Discovery News via Treehugger, DVICE]
