Lotus and Harmon are banking on a market for simulated sound technology as more and more hybrid vehicles find their way onto the road. There is some concern that the near silent vehicles pose a danger to pedestrians who cannot hear them coming. The Electronic Sound Synthesis system makes use of speakers at the front and rear of the vehicle to warn pedestrians of the vehicle’s approach.

It also runs the sound through the vehicle’s entertainment system to simulate the satisfying sound that a gas-guzzling monster generates naturally when you press pedal to metal. [Gear Log]
