The University of Minnesota police are aiming to cut down bike theft with what has been entitled the “Bait Bike Program. Campus police will install hidden GPS tracking systems on abandoned bikes. Allowing them to track a bike to a thief’s home and send real police to arrest them. As much as a problem as bike theft is, one can’t help but think that they would be better off turning the abandoned bikes into community bikes and letting anyone ride them. [Navigadget via Ubergizmo]

How is an abandoned bike considered stolen? Someone has to report an item stolen before it is considered stolen. At least in the real world. These people (that would be the campus police) are idiots.
