French Company Pimps Some Fire ExtinguisherStumble This

fire-design-extinguishers
If you have a fire extinguisher chances are that it is the same old fire engine red as has been used pretty much since fire extinguishers were invented. A French design company wants to change all of that with some cool ultra-modern design work. They look cool, très chic in fact, but you have to wonder at the wisdom of turning a safety device into a fashion statement. [Fire Design via We Interrupt, Nerd Approved]

The Designer extinguisher is apparently made just for America as the United Kingdom, most of Europe and Australia have regulations concerning color. The US has rules about the markings which determine what kind of fire or flame the extinguisher is good for. I was previously under the thought that all had to be red. I like things that are designed to save one’s life and property to be a standard color. It is not a requirement apparently.
Still, if given the choice, I would like them Red. The reason is, when fire is detected, one is not concerned so much with the beauty of the item but using it as fast as possible. To do so requires finding one fast. One solid color that stands out would meet that requirement. I would hate to have a stove fire and grab a cocktail shaker by mistake to put it out.

    Robitj,
That is a very good point and I’m behind you 100%. Yet I feel the company behind this design is going to well because some people out there prefer to have design come first and safety dead last.
