Carlito’s Automatic Safe-cracker: A Beautiful DIY FailureStumble This

Carlito’s safe-cracker is one of those DIY failures that is too damned awesome to ignore.

Some background to the story: a safe came into Carlito’s possession that he wanted to open. He didn’t want to call in a locksmith and he didn’t want to destroy the safe; instead, he turned to his skills.

Carlito devised a gadget that would spin the dial of the safe through every possible combination until it opened. A micro-controller was the brains of the operation, while a server motor was used to physically spin the dial.

The snag, the servo motor was not powerful enough to do the job. Also, you have to wonder if the correct combination is hit, wouldn’t it just get locked again? [Hacked Gadgets via We Interrupt]
