DIY: Turn a Chest Freezer Into a Super Energy Efficient FridgeStumble This

chest_fridge
While vertical fridges provide convenient access to all of your food, they are an energy-inefficient way of keeping it cool. A much better way to get the job done is to convert a chest freezer into a fridge and run the compressor just often enough to keep to keep things at the required temperature. The total energy consumption is around 100W per hour – which is especially good if you are living off the grid.

The cool thing with this DIY project is that it requires zero modification to the freezer. The temperature is maintained by way of a digital thermostat that connects between the freezer and the wall. The cost in parts is around USD $25, and the schematics are free, or (if you live in Australia) you can get one fully assembled for AUD $150.
