A British built steam powered car has broken a record that has stood for more than a century. More than 100 years ago, Frend Marriot drove a steam powered vehicle at 127mph, a remarkable feat in its time, and one that proved very difficult to beat until Charles Burnett III climbed into the 25-foot, 3-ton steam car dubbed “kettle”.
Burnett’s speed was a respectable 139.483mph on the first trip and a staggering 151.085mph on the return. That ought to be good enough to keep the record intact for another hundred years. [BBC via Gizmowatch]
