UberReview is approaching it’s 5th anniversary and we need your input to take us to the next level. One of the most important parts of any successful website is advertising, love it or hate it, advertising pays the bills and allows us to expand to become a better site. One of the aspects that I want to focus on is attracting better targeted advertisers so that we can decrease the amount of advertising that we use. To make that possible we need our readers to please fill out this survey and you are automatically entered for a chance to win $100.
To make the offer even more attractive, I will give a $50 cash prize via PayPal to one lucky reader, if you fill out the survey and leave a comment on this post on how we can improve the UberReview. I really value your input and I would love to hear what we can do better. Now is your chance to make us a better site. The prize will be given to the comment that gives the best feedback as selected by myself and Chris (aka. CS Magor)
Here are some things that you can give us feedback on:
Would you like more posts or less?
Would you like more reviews?
would you like to see more videos?
would you like us to build a community with profiles?
What area would you like to see more of? More gadgets, design, all things geeky and cool or all the above?
Is there anything else you would like to see us focus on or change?
We will leave the comments open for 2 weeks. Good luck and thanks for your time.

Would you like more posts or less? I think you guys do a good amount of post for a day. I like to catch you guys on my morning break.
Would you like more reviews? I like reviews since it’s normally stuff that I can’t get to try out myself.
would you like to see more videos? I don’t have time to watch videos so only if it really helps show/explain something better then words.
would you like us to build a community with profiles? No. There are enough of those.
What area would you like to see more of? More gadgets, design, all things geeky and cool or all the above? I would like you to stick with gadgets and designs. Getting into all geeky things starts to get too wide and you post things I don’t care about then.
Is there anything else you would like to see us focus on or change? Nope. There is a reason I come here every day.

>>Would you like more posts or less? -
I read the UberReview in GoogleReader daily. I am also subscribed to Gizmodo. One of the things that I don’t like about Gizmodo is that every time I open Reader, there’s about 50 new posts from them, and that’s too much to scroll through, say nothing of reading it all. However, there’s only occasionally a post from the UberReview. I think there ought to be a happy medium somewhere, perhaps a post or two every day.
>>Would you like more reviews?-
Don’t you usually review something when you post it? Yes. Reviews are good. News articles are interesting too. Perhaps reviews of things that I would consider buying might be more helpful than reviews of some crazy thing that I could never afford, not that you should stop posting those… but perhaps fewer of them would be good.
>>would you like to see more videos?
On Facebook, videos are indicated on a page with a miniscule, space-saving black box with an arrow in it. If you click, the video blows up and you can watch it. That, to me, is a great technique. I don’t have to leave the page I’m on, but if I don’t want to watch the video, it doesn’t take up the whole page. This would be a big kudos if you could figure out how to incorporate that into the UR.
>>would you like us to build a community with profiles?
No. The last thing I need is another Facebook or Myspace.
And you already allow people who comment to put a link to their website on their comments, so I don’t see any reason to go further with that. Speaking of which, it’s WONDERFUL that you don’t have to log in to make a comment. I end up leaving lots of sites like that, thinking that I might have left a comment if I hadn’t had to sign up or register.
>>What area would you like to see more of? More gadgets, design, all things geeky and cool or all the above? –
Like I said, all things are great, but don’t bother reviewing something that the general middle-class geek could never afford. Post it, sure, link to it, sure, but I don’t need to know everything about it if I can’t ever buy it.
>>Is there anything else you would like to see us focus on or change? -
Some of your writers need to grammar- and spell-check before they publish. It’s sad to see the infantilization that’s happening in the cyber world lately.
So.. there you go.
Hope this helps.

Patrick,
That helps out a lot. I agree with Aaron and yourself, building another community based site is the last thing we need. I just threw that out there. What I did find very interesting was your thoughts on comments and registering. I was thinking of enhancing the comment functionality and I feel the same way about registering to allow comments. I will make sure that does not change.
Oct 8, 2009 at 8:54 pm
No problem. What exactly were you going to enhance about the comment feature?
However, even though you don’t need to convert the UR into another social networking site, you could always promote yourself on social networking sites… I’d totally “Become A Fan” of the UR on Facebook. I don’t know if there’s a way to have a Facebook page update whenever you update the UR, but that would be neat…
Although, nowadays, the fact that you’re NOT on FB might help you stand out more. I don’t know.
Good luck with your venture towards usability!

>>Would you like more posts or less? -
I think that there are a good amount of posts every day. If you did a couple more posts a day I would be delighted though.
>>Would you like more reviews?-
Sure. I like to get recommendations for products that I might use. I think that the reviews should never exceed 50% of the posts you do though. I love the concept posts and the one of a kind constructs that the average person could never afford.
>>would you like to see more videos?
No. I usually read this in the morning as my roommate is sleeping. I think I’ve only watched one of the videos that have been posted since I’m usually in a situation that I can’t have my laptop speakers on.
>>would you like us to build a community with profiles?
Please no! No more logins!
>>What area would you like to see more of? More gadgets, design, all things geeky and cool or all the above? –
I personally love the conceptual gadget posts the most. I read and enjoy almost everything that is posted though.
>>Is there anything else you would like to see us focus on or change? -
No, I think you’re doing a good job!

Would you like more posts or less?
Would you like more reviews?
—Yes, I would like more reviews. From a business perspective, wouldn’t you as Uberreview want that as well? The more people visit your site the greater the chances of them SEEING your advertising and hence increase profit and the future of the site. And from my personal aspect, I believe it is of paramount importance that you establish your website to a level that differs from the countless ones out there that do what you do.
would you like to see more videos?
—Only if it relates to the product at hand. We have Youtube for almost anything now. Having unrelated videos will just condense your site more. The site is easy to read now without much eyesores.
would you like us to build a community with profiles?
—Absolutely not. As some said earlier, there are too many out there. A review/preview technology site is usually technology oriented, and not about making new friends or having a G-stringed babe as an avatar!
What area would you like to see more of? More gadgets, design, all things geeky and cool or all the above?
—All of the above, definitely. I believe that those technologies/inventions/innovations that make us say, “Oh wow. Now, that’s stinkin awesome” should be shown on your site. [You know what I mean] There are many – you just have to know where to retrieve them from.
Is there anything else you would like to see us focus on or change?
—Btw, I haven’t come across spelling errors as someone mentioned but that is definitely something to think about IF you want to establish yourself above. Then again, even the NYT makes unbelieveable mistakes!
Here are my side comments I would like to make/propose:
—You mentioned advertising and the importance of it. I agree; it’s needed. I also understand why you had the survey, but the survey alone won’t aide that much and you’ll have people in the future visiting your site that did not take your survey.
Today, I noticed advertising on your site that showed “Six Flags prices”, “Exclusive millionaire strategies…”, and “I got ripped in 4 weeks without dieting or going to the gym”.
….I clicked on none. No value for me, and I can be bold to state that it had no interest to many others that visited. Please, don’t misunderstand me because I’m not putting you down, but just giving constructive, polite comments. (Hopefully)
How can you improve Uberreview? By having more products reviews/previews and by implementing other advertising products for your income. I also like the fact that your site doesn’t have to many flashy ANNOYING ads. I cannot describe how horrible they are. I would actually leave this site – I’ve left many. It’s an eye sore, literally.
I have 1 idea that will involve another site (which I won’t state simply so others won’t visit it!
Uberreview rention 101 lol) If you email me I’ll tell you my idea.
So basically, advertise more realistic and needed services/products that MIDDLE-CLASS people need/would want – basically those that can afford it. I also think that it would benefit you if the advertiments are not a scam or some lame product. Getting ‘ripped’ without working out is absolute insanity/stupidy. No?
I’d be more than happy to give a list of ads that could interest people. I’ve lost my job 1.5 months ago, so the least I could do is take some minutes and email you – if ya want.

couln’t even spell “rentention” !
Oct 9, 2009 at 3:46 pm
or ‘couldn’t’.
Oct 9, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I second the not registering to comment. I didn’t even think about that when I made my comment- which is exactly how it should be.
Oct 9, 2009 at 11:39 pm
@Patrick
I was planning on upgrading the comments to allow easy access with Twitter, Facebook and maybe allow video comments. I might start a Facebook Fan page. We have had great success with on our other site, We Interrupt with the Facebook Fan page. I will make sure that what ever comment feature we add that it requires no registration.
@Allison, thanks for your input and kind words
@Sorin, those are the vary ads we hate as well, yet you see them everywhere. By getting people to fill out the survey, we will be able to attract better quality ads that are suited for our readers.

Personally I would like to see a slight increase in posts, including reviews, but not including videos. Your site is my first go-to site for tech stuff, but I usually do not watch videos, and if I do only realativly short ones. This has to do with my internet connection (via satellite).
“No” the concept of another community.
I really like your current content as it has a wide range of stuff…not weighted to phones, or consols, or any other particular tech.
And Sorin D has really said it, but I want to add…please don’t go to ads that are videos. I really get POed with them as I am usually not interested and they really burn up my bandwidth.
Just more of what you are doing…more, I say, more, more, More, MORE (insane laughter)
Oct 11, 2009 at 11:35 pm
I really like the things you find to share on the site. It also seems that there is more content daily which is nice.
A “most read / most popular” list / bar on the site would be a welcome addition.
