Overhead Rack For Bicycles, the Most Sensible Surfboard Transportation Option Yet

An overhead bicycle surfboard rack is a much more sensible idea than it sounds. If you don’t live near a beach, you might not realize that there are actually quite a few people that bike to their favorite breaks with their boards.

Traditionally there are two options for surfboard transportation via bicycle: the ride-and-carry, which is gives the rider very limited control and is extremely dangerous in high-traffic environments; or an outrigger style rack that reduces control and is not a whole lot better.

This is a nice concept. I would guess that it makes your bike very top heavy. However if your riding is affected by length (traffic) then it looks like the way to go.
There are other options to carrying a board or kayak aside from the two ‘Traditional’ ones mentioned. More than a few bicycle trailer people make an option to carry up to a 17′ canoe or kayak. A little searching will find them.
Nearly anything you can carry on a car can be lugged with a bike.

first off, this is stupid!!! i can tell you why from experince. First off, it may not seem like it, but it will hit things like poles you ride by and trees above you at the cost of your board. I have tried a board rack that makes the board stick up behind the bike and it sucks!! do not use it!!!!

the best option is a board rack made from pvc for about 15 bucks that you make yourself. it works great and i have stacked a longboard surfboard and a kiteboard with no problems.

This is a bad rack dont buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will – this doesn’t take it much higher than a normal person’s head, so you are going to have to be riding under some pretty low poles to crash into one. I have done a fair bit of riding in my time and this seems like the more natural way to arrange things. Of course, there are trailers as pointed out by RobitJ, but I have never been a fan of the bike trailer.

first off, im not talking about poles above you, im also talking about ones on sidewalks that say “no parking” and such. the will ding the sides of the boards. When your in the bike lane and theres not much room, you will hit the stop sign if its close enough. powerlines also have a big wooden pole thats easy to run into as well. also, when you have something that high above your head, the wind will push you around alot. i use mine for kiteboarding so it willl be windy every time i go. and when i go surfing/skimboarding, i want to just lock up my bike to a pole without having the hassle to take the surfboard off at the same time. you get what i mean? with the ones that mount on the side of the bike all you do is lean your bike against the pole, then have your board ready to take off after your done locking it up.

sources of information: 2 years of surfing every morning with one on a motorized bicycle and going 7 miles each way. also 1 year of kiteboarding in the afternoon when its windy, 5 miles each way the other direction from my house.

make this one, i have used it on my motorized bicycle at a consistent speed of 28 miles per hour everday for a long time.
